Herrnhut – Home of the worldfamous Moravians Church
The name Herrnhut is derived from the phrase "Under the care of the Lord“. The town was founded in 1722 by Protestant religious refugees. Herrnhut is also known as the place in which the annual Watchwords of the Day are selected.
The original “Herrnhuter Sterne” (Moravian Stars) have made their mark well beyond the town's borders. They were created in the middle of the 19th century in the Moravians Brethren municipal school in Herrnhut and sed to promote their missionary work worldwide.
At Advent and during the Christmas season, the locals decorate their many streets, houses and churches with “Herrnhuter Sternen”. Beside the stars, the Sculpture Trail with elements of the Moravian History of Herrnhut as well as the Zinzendorf Heritage Trail are popular walks in the town.
