SANDSTONE ZOO

“Sitting Hen“, “Saint Bernard“and co. welcome you to an exciting adventure! In the enchanting rock landscape of the Nature Park Zittau Mountains there are numerous “animals” and bizarre rock figures many millions of years old. Over time, the natural sculptors of wind, water, heat and ice have all given these rocks their “animalistic” figure.

More than 65 million years ago the area was covered by the sea. As the sand settled at the bottom of the sea, it was hardened to sandstone under high pressure. Later, as the sea was disappearing, layers of sandstone emerged and erosion began. In addition volcanic eruptions caused blistering liquid lava to form more mountains and stones during the cooling process.

Come with us on a trip of discovery on one of the three tracks through the Sandstone Zoo of the Zittau Mountains. Look around you, which animals can you discover?
